What Goes Into Surrogacy Costs?

The costs associated with your surrogacy process can be broken down into several categories. Some of these expenses are one-time costs and others are variable expense areas:

Agency Service Fees

1/8

These one-time fees are the fees paid to Growing Generations for the management of your case. We match you with the right surrogate for your needs and manage every phase of your journey from start to finish.

IVF Expenses

3/8

Every surrogacy journey requires the help of an IVF physician to screen your surrogate, complete the embryo transfer, and oversee the first weeks of your pregnancy.

Surrogate Compensation and Related Expenses

2/8

Your surrogate will receive compensation for her time and commitment. A portion of surrogate compensation is paid leading up to her getting pregnant, and the remainder is paid over the course of her pregnancy. In addition to the compensation she receives, your surrogate will also be eligible for reimbursement for lost wages, childcare, and homecare expenses if needed.

Legal Fees

4/8

Your legal team will draft surrogacy contracts and handle parental establishment proceedings. Law firms will often offer fixed or ala carte pricing.

Escrow Provider Fees

5/8

To comply with industry best practice and most state laws, an independent escrow provider must hold and distribute your surrogate’s compensation.

Insurance Expenses

6/8

Several insurance policies are put in place to financially protect you and your surrogate. We have a fixed-fee insurance program, so you’ll pay one price no matter the expense of your surrogate insurance needs. If you reside outside of the U.S., you’ll also need insurance coverage for your newborn baby.

Travel

7/8

Your surrogate will require travel to and from the IVF clinic for screening and embryo transfer procedures.

Egg or Sperm Donor Expenses

8/8

If you need a donor for your family building needs, you’ll compensate your donor, pay a donor agency fee, and incur related legal, insurance, medical and travel expenses for your donor.

At Growing Generations, we value flexibility and financial transparency. To help you plan for your surrogacy journey, we’ll share detailed budgets with you at the beginning or your process, as well as throughout it, so you are informed along the way.

WHY ARE THE COST RANGES SO LARGE?

The largest ranges have to do with how much your gestational surrogate receives in compensation, whether you need the help of an egg or sperm donor, and which Growing Generations program you select. There may be additional variables depending on your unique journey, including:

  • Whether your embryos have already been created

  • The number of IVF transfer cycles required

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO CREATE EMBRYOS?

If you do not already have embryos created, you will also need to factor in the expenses of creating embryos using your own or donated eggs. Families using their own eggs should expect to spend $26,000-$35,000. If you will be pursuing surrogacy with donor eggs, you can expect costs to range from $50,000-$80,000.

Surrogacy Cost FAQ's

  • The average cost for our surrogacy program begins at $213,000. This includes agency fees, surrogate compensation, medical expenses, legal fees, insurance, and other related costs. Your total cost will depend on your chosen program level and personal preferences.

  • Our agency fees cover the full scope of support we provide throughout your journey, including surrogate recruitment and screening, personalized matching, case management, and ongoing support from consultation through delivery. As needed, we also introduce you to experienced professionals including reproductive law attorneys, mental health professionals, and medical providers.

  • We are committed to being as transparent as possible with costs. As such, there are no hidden costs. When a surrogacy process exceeds its budget, it is usually due to unexpected events, such as having to do more than one attempt at pregnancy, needs more embryos, needing more than one surrogate. We are happy to create budget scenarios for you to understand costs associated when dealing with the unexpected.

  • Surrogate compensation is paid out installments as the process progresses. Once progress milestone payments are made, they are earned. If a pregnancy is not achieved or a loss occurs, your surrogate will not receive compensation that she has not yet earned.

  • Sometimes, yes. Fertility or Family Creation Benefits are a new and emerging benefits offered by many large employers. We encourage you to check with your employer to find out if you have available benefits. We’ve seen benefits range from $5,000 to covering the entire process. The largest providers of these benefits are Carrot, WIN, Progyny, and Maven.
